Tree of Life

Pittsburgh, PA
Designer at Studio Libeskind
Ongoing

Studio Libeskind, in collaboration with Rothschild Doyne Collaborative, redesigned the Tree of Life or L'Simcha Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA following the tragic attack on October 27, 2018. SDL and RDC reimagined the 45,000sf building and its exterior landscaping as a modernized sanctuary for civic, religious, and educational events that honor and celebrate the victims of the attack.

The redesigned synagogue and cultural center memorializes the history of the site through dedicated reflection spaces, thought-provoking landscape, and vast, light-filled spaces that encourage contemplation of both personal and collective loss. Engagement with time and memory is carried through the non-linear memorial garden, evoking emotion, opportunity, and hope for the growing families and community in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood.
